Discussing cycling infrastructure and urban living labs in Turin

Almost 50 SMILE CITY partners from different consortium organisations met in Turin, Italy on September 15 and 16, 2025, for two days of idea exchanges about mobility and circular systemic solutions, life cycle assessments and policy recommendation.

Day 1 focused on the topic of cycling: the outcomes of mobility surveys across our pilot cities were presented, followed by discussions about the state of the art of and main issues with cycling lanes and cycling tracks. In the afternoon, participants talked about how to include recycled tyre materials (RTMs) in cycling infrastructure and how and where to best set up Urban Living Labs (ULLs) to test the innovations from the SMILE CITY project.

The driving topics on Day 2 were eco-design and (social) life cycle assessments. SMILE CITY works on polymeric materials, PV panels, clean energy, concrete, paving and urban furniture – a broad range of sectors requiring vastly different assessment procedures. Discussing varied approaches was therefore very useful to ensure all responsible partners are prepared as well as possible for their respective tasks.
