A look ahead – Exploring digital tools and the SMILE CITY App in Brussels

On July 2, 2025, SMILE CITY partner ETRA hosted 11 representatives from six consortium members at their offices in Brussels, Belgium.

The main topic driving the day: the SMILE CITY App – which data and information should be shared? Which functions should it have? To answer these questions, partners Nottingham Trent University, Solum, and The Institute for Ecology of Industrial Areas (IETU) presented a review of already existing mobile apps with similar goals. The objective was to critically assess their functionalities, strengths, and limitations in the context of the SMILE CITY project’s goals – particularly the aim to develop a specialized eco-accounting mobile app that promotes sustainable behaviour through e-bike charging incentives, lifecycle-based eco-costs, and reward systems. This was followed by a discussion among all present consortium members.

The meeting was also used to talk about a subtask report done by partner Cycling Industries Europe about Standards and Regulations for E-Bike Charging Stations, and Solutions for Efficient E-Bike Mobility.
